If you're in the Swellendam area, be sure to pop in at the BRUISE Gallery where myself and various local artists will be exhibiting along the theme of "Figure Out" as of Thursday 8th of June (opening).
Figure… the figurative in art is a representational portrayal as used in anatomical drawing or portraiture in contrast abstract/expressive art is without figure, nonrepresentational and considered more emotive in nature …but most people will still try to ‘figure it out’…
"Light Hearted" - 60cm (h) x 40cm (w)
Acrylic on canvas, framed without glass.
I'll be featuring this painting at the exhibition. As the painting suggests, the model and theme is "Light Hearted" - one can read into the nature of it depending on your stance - the fiery red head symbolizing passion, strength of character and a woman's inner strength. Others may be triggered by her beauty and care-free frivolity, or simply as a cliche representing sexuality. Either way, everyone will view it differently - you'll figure it out yourself. For me personally, it celebrates a particular woman in a state of blissful confidence, unperturbed by what anyone thinks of her in that moment, caught in her own thoughts as she navigates life between the light and the dark.
